The Four Horsemen - Hour 1 / will-morris on 24 Dec 2007

On the 30th of September 2007, Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens sat down for a first-of-its-kind, unmoderated 2-hour discussion, convened by RDFRS and filmed by Josh Timonen.

All four authors have recently received a large amount of media attention for their writings against religion - some positive, and some negative. In this conversation the group trades stories of the public’s reaction to their recent books, their unexpected successes, criticisms and common misrepresentations. They discuss the tough questions about religion that face to world today, and propose new strategies for going forward.

He has also written for The Nation, Granta, Harper's, The Washington Post, and is a frequent television and radio guest. Authors@Google: James Randi / will-morris on 20 Aug 2007

James Randi is an internationally known magician (as The Amazing
Randi), psychic debunker, and winner of a MacArthur Foundation "Genius
Grant." He was a founding fellow of the Committee for the Scientific
Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP). He is perhaps best
known for offering $1,000,000 (via the James Randi Educational
Foundation) to anyone who can successfully demonstrate psychic powers
under conditions mutually agreed on by the challenger and himself.
Starting with a $10,000 prize over 25 years ago, no claimant to
psychic powers has ever won the money.

Randi has pursued "psychic" spoonbenders, exposed the dirty tricks of
faith healers, investigated homeopathic water "with a memory," and
generally been a thorn in the sides of those who try to pull the wool
over the public's eyes in the name of the supernatural.

This event took place August 6, 2007 at Google Headquarters in Mountain View, CA.

Dan Dennett: Ants, terrorism, and the awesome power of meme / David Mullen on 4 Jul 2007

http://www.ted.com Here's one of those talks that can change your view of the world forever. Starting with the deceptively simple story of an ant, Dan Dennett unleashes a dazzling sequence of ideas, making a powerful case for the existence of "memes" -- a term coined by Richard Dawkins for mental concepts that are literally alive and capable of spreading from brain to brain. On the way, look out for:
+ a powerful one-sentence secret of happiness
+ a compelling insight into terrorists' motivation
+ a chilling view of Islam
And just when you think you know where the talk's heading, it dramatically shifts direction and questions some of western culture's fundamental assumptions.
This. Is. Unmissable.

Daniel Dennett: Can We Know Our Own Minds? / will-morris on 23 May 2007

Philosopher Dan Dennett makes a compelling argument that not only don't we understand our own consciousness, but that half the time our brains are actively fooling us. As he puts it, our bodies are made up of 100 trillion little robots, none of them with an individual consciousness. So what makes us feel we have one? Or that we're in control of it? Dennett's hope is to show his audience that "Your consciousness is not quite as marvelous as you may have thought it is." He uses thought experiments and optical illusions to demonstrate to the TED audience that even very big brains are capable of playing tricks on their owners.
